CAYCE WENT into the house, slammed the door, and leaned up against it. He was as breathless as if he had run a mile. It was them. It was them. It was them. He saw the car with Sheryl McKenna in it, could see it in his mind’s eye clear as memory.

He hobbled into the living room and collapsed on the sofa. I need to get ready for work. I can’t do this. He wanted to run into the street, screaming and flailing his fists, telling anyone who would listen to chase the red Mustang. It was the car that had taken the girls to their deaths.

But who would listen?

Cayce closed his eyes, giving himself a moment to compose himself, but it was impossible. Along with the certainty that he had just seen the killers also dawned the knowledge the killers had been parked almost in front of his house—and they were watching.

Thank God Luke wasn’t with me. Thank God Luke is at his grandparents’ and not here.

Cayce rubbed his forehead, thinking maybe he should just call the police, get that Simmons woman on the phone and lie to her. Tell her to forget about the visions. The truth was he had seen the red Mustang and seen both Lucy Plant and Sheryl McKenna in it. Just look for a beat-up old red Mustang, he could say, and you’ll be well on your way to solving these crimes.

Easy enough… if you hadn’t already told your “visions” story to practically anyone who would listen. Why were you such a fool? Cayce paused, ready to kick himself, to take a fist to his very own face. But then he continued the monologue he was conducting with himself. How were you to know? How were you to know how to deal with this gift, this curse? You only wanted to help people, and you never wanted to be involved at all. He sighed. Get ready for work. You still have a child to support, a living to make.

Cayce headed for the shower, dropping a trail of clothes as he went.
